Summary: Elena clings to the fragments of herself, and what principles she has left.

	A Matter of Principle

The second time he left without telling her, she changed the locks in her apartment. They weren't dating, but it's a point that she would prove to any friend. Sex or no sex. And anyway it didn't stop him, but it's more of a matter of principle. He couldn't keep waltzing back in, even if he did owe her a story. The jerk. And if he's short a lockpick, he always pulls out the cheap shots.

Namely, Sully, exhausted and wounded, maybe.

As it stands, Elena has taken to hotels with electronic locks when she's on assignment. (They are slightly harder for him to break into.) She's also tried to wear ear plugs, but that backfired. Nothing like your...friend? Boyfriend? Nothing like a friend breaking down the door of a cheap hotel at three am to make sure you're alive.

So, also on principle she made Nate pay for the repairs, and he sneaked away while she wasn't looking. He left a stupidly romantic trinket on the bed, with a smart-aleck note. Just because he could. _(Wanna go out sometime? No exploding temples, no guns. Just you, me and a bottle of wine?)_ Apparently, he really is interested, and not just in the fabulous sex they'd had after getting back from South America.

Even after two years of dating, when he proposes, she still clings to the last fragment of her old self. You know, that one that existed before she met Nathan Drake.

She refuses at least twice, on_ principle_, and a third time, just because she likes to see him squirm for once. It's only after Sully drops by (without Nate) that she finally calls him.

"Hey," She says, and Nate's silent. Completely not bitter about being turned down, then. It's been three weeks since he last asked. "Hey...I wanted to talk to you." Still silent. "Is it too late to say yes?"

If she could see him, it would just prove that his smile is as brilliant as the sun. It's probably a good thing that she can't, though. His whooping would make her go deaf if he were any closer.
